Taking ESL classes in the U.S. is a great way to immerse yourself in the language and become fluent more quickly. In addition working on material in your English classes, you can accelerate your progress by looking for daily opportunities to practice your speaking skills. Opportunities to practice speaking are plentiful; use the following list to get started.
Form an ESL Study Group
Ask your fellow ESL students if they would like to meet with you after class to review the material and practice speaking. Take turns asking each other questions, such as “Where are you from?”, “What are your favorite things to do?”, and “What is your hometown like?” Your ESL study group may also wish to visit various attractions together to practice speaking with native English speakers. For example, you might plan a trip to a museum or shopping mall.
Read Out Loud
Head to a local library or bookstore and pick up a few books in English. Depending on your current skill level with English, you may wish to select books that are written for children or adolescents. Practice reading these books out loud. Make a list of any words that you find difficult to pronounce and practice saying them throughout the day.
Sing Your Favorite Songs
Translate your favorite songs into English—or choose some popular American songs you enjoy—and practice singing them. Feel free to slow down the pace of the song if you need to.
Look for Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and practice speaking English at the same time. Look for volunteer opportunities in hospitals, community centers, animal shelters, and senior care facilities.
